History of the MAZ-509
Two versions of the same lorry
The MAZ-509P was built from 1966 to 1969, and the MAZ-509 followed from 1966 to 1978. As on the base lorry, its wheelbase grew to 3,950 mm. Compared with the 509P, the MAZ-509 had a two-plate clutch, different ratios in the transfer case and in the gearbox, a payload 500 kg higher and a front axle with conventional rather than planetary hub reductions.
On the timber run
Early MAZ-509s of 1969 and 1970 had the same front finish as the MAZ-500. The logging lorry worked with two-axle timber trailers, the GKB-9383 or the TMZ-803M. In 1973 the MAZ-509 was awarded the state quality mark of the USSR.
The MAZ-509A
From 1977 the plant built the MAZ-509A, which carried the external features of the updated MAZ-5334 and MAZ-5335 family. It stayed in production until 1990.
