The Kia Ceed is a compact family car that Kia has built since October 2006 for the European market alone. It was the first Kia designed entirely in Europe and made to European tastes, and it replaced the Cerato, which had sold poorly there.

History of the Kia Ceed
The name comes from the initials of the European Economic Community, EEC or CEE in several languages, with ED added for European Design. CEEED had too many Es, so the last one became an apostrophe and the car was called the Cee’d; since 2018 the name has been written simply Ceed, and the initials now mean Community of Europe, with European Design. The car is built mainly at Kia’s plant in Zilina, Slovakia.

First generation (2006)
The Cee’d was unveiled on 28 September 2006 at the Paris Motor Show. It was designed in Frankfurt under Miklos Kovacs, with the concept car drawn by Pontus Fontaeus, and it used the same platform as the Hyundai i30. The first generation came with four engines, two petrol and two diesel, five equipment levels in some markets and a choice of manual or automatic transmission; the three main trims were LX, EX and TX, and the flagship TX had part-leather seats, 225/45 Michelin tyres on 17-inch alloys and rear parking sensors. Six airbags, active front headrests, ABS, EBD and brake assist were standard. At launch the warranty was one of the longest in Europe: seven years or 150,000 km for the powertrain and five years for the whole car. About 646,300 first-generation cars were built.
Body styles
The Cee’d Sportswagon estate arrived in mid-2007; it was the only version offered with the 2.0-litre CRDi engine and claimed 534 litres of boot space with the rear seats up and 1,664 litres with them folded. The three-door Pro Cee’d followed in late 2007, with its own rear-end design, a stance 5 cm lower and a body 5 cm longer than the five-door. A facelift was shown at the Frankfurt show in September 2009: the five-door and estate got a new front and rear with Kia’s Tiger Nose grille, while the three-door was left unchanged outside. The Cee’d scored five Euro NCAP stars for adult occupants before the facelift.
Second generation (2012)
The JD generation made its world premiere at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It was more sophisticated and better equipped than the first car, but also significantly more expensive, which moved the Cee’d out of the budget class. About 647,700 were built. The Pro Cee’d GT of July 2013 was Kia’s first performance model and the first European-style hot hatch from a Korean maker; the five-door Cee’d GT followed in January 2014. Both used a turbocharged 1.6-litre T-GDi engine with 265 Nm, the same unit as the Hyundai Veloster Turbo in America but with different gear ratios and firmer suspension. The car was facelifted in 2015.
Third generation (2018)
The third Ceed was shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. A Proceed shooting brake joined it in early 2019 and the XCeed, a crossover version, in June 2019. By 2023 the Ceed sat between the K3 supermini and the K5 family car, and in January 2026 the hatchback, Sportswagon and Proceed were replaced by the K4, while the XCeed continued.
