History of the KamAZ-43253

The 43253 is a two-axle truck designed for regional transport, placed by KamAZ above the lighter KamAZ-4308. When exactly series production began is not clear, but the maker has offered the model since at least 2001. Besides the flatbed it serves as a chassis for other machines, among them a mobile crane, tankers, refuse trucks and fire engines, and a tipper version is sold as the KamAZ-43255.

The driveline is essentially that of the 4308. The six-cylinder Cummins diesel produced 242 hp in the version offered in the middle of 2016, and a weaker variant of 185 hp was also listed; earlier vehicles used Cummins engines of 210 hp or the plant’s own 240 hp unit. The gearbox is a hand-shifted six-speed from ZF Friedrichshafen. Because the truck is meant for short runs, the cab has no sleeping place.

In its most powerful form of 2016 the 43253 measures 7,505 mm long, 2,550 mm wide and up to 3,320 mm high on a 4,200 mm wheelbase, with a flatbed of 5,162 by 2,470 mm and 730 mm sides. It weighs 7,015 kg empty, carries 7,250 kg and has a gross weight of 14,590 kg, with a 350-litre tank, a 20 m turning circle and a maximum gradient of 25 per cent. The electrical system runs on 24 volts with two 190 Ah batteries in series. Because the same chassis takes municipal bodies so easily, the 43253 is a common sight as a street sprinkler or a fire engine.

Design and features

  • Chassis and flatbed: offered as a lorry or as a bare chassis for cranes, tankers, refuse bodies and fire engines.

  • ZF gearbox: a six-speed manual from ZF Friedrichshafen.
  • Day cab only: no sleeping place, as the truck is intended for regional work.
  • Municipal favourite: the chassis carries sprinklers, refuse bodies and fire appliances.

KamAZ-43253 versions

  • KamAZ-43253 flatbed: the standard lorry with a 5,162 mm bed.
  • KamAZ-43253 chassis: a bare chassis for cranes, tankers, refuse trucks and fire engines.
  • KamAZ-43255: a tipper version of the same lorry.
  • Earlier engine versions: Cummins units of 210 hp and the plant’s own 240 hp diesel.
  • 185 hp version: a weaker Cummins-engined variant offered alongside the 242 hp truck.

The smaller KamAZ-4308 sits below it in the range; the three-axle KamAZ-65115 is the plant’s classic tipper. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
