History of the KamAZ-65225

The 65225 has been produced since 2004 as a heavy tractor unit with drive to all three axles. A restyling in 2010 changed its character: from then on the truck has been fitted with the new cab licensed from the Mercedes-Benz Axor, mounted on four-point air suspension and combined with better aerodynamics and a more modern interior. That cab is the clearest sign of how far KamAZ had moved from the glassfibre-and-steel interiors of the 1970s.

The engine is the KamAZ-740.63-400, a turbocharged and intercooled V8 of 11.76 litres in Euro 3 form, producing 294 kW, or 400 hp. The gearbox is the sixteen-speed ZF 16S1820, with a six-speed Allison automatic offered as an option. The wheels carry 12.00 R20 tyres, either twin or single on the driving axles, and the truck reaches 80 km/h, climbs an 18 per cent gradient and turns in 11.5 m.

The weight figures depend on the roads the outfit is meant for. On ordinary roads with ten-tonne axle loads the tractor weighs 11,150 kg empty, carries 11,000 kg on the fifth wheel and pulls a semi-trailer of 26,700 kg, for a train weight of 38,000 kg. The material also gives figures for a much heavier combination: with a fifth-wheel load of 22,000 kg and a semi-trailer of 64,000 kg, the train may weigh 75,300 kg, while the gradient capability drops from 18 to 10 per cent. Those numbers are for operation where the axle-load rules allow them, which is the sort of condition heavy haulage in Russia often meets.

Design and features

  • Axor-licensed cab: a Mercedes-Benz cab on four-point air suspension since the 2010 restyling.

KamAZ-65225 versions

  • KamAZ-65225: the standard 6×6 tractor unit.
  • 2010 restyling: the version with the Mercedes Axor-licensed cab.
  • Allison version: the tractor with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
  • Twin-tyre and single-tyre versions: the two specifications of the driving axles.

The all-wheel-drive KamAZ-65224 is its closest relative and rival, and the KamAZ-5460 is the road-going long-haul tractor of the same generation. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
