History of the KamAZ-5460
The 5460 belongs to the third generation of KamAZ trucks, the same line from which the heavy KamAZ-6520 tipper comes, and it has been produced since 2010. Its role is long-distance haulage: a two-axle tractor with a short wheelbase of 3,950 mm, a large fuel tank and a cab designed for two drivers to live in for days at a time.
The engine is the KamAZ-740.64-420, a V8 of 11,760 cm³ in Euro 3 form with 420 hp. KamAZ quotes a reduction in fuel consumption from 48 to 36 litres per 100 km for this installation, which also uses a hypoid final drive of 3.58 to cut internal losses in the transmission. The gearbox options were the ZF 16S151 and the ZF 16S1820, both sixteen-speed units, with the automated ZF-Astronic 12AS1931TO named in the material as well; the clutch is an F&S MFZ-430 and the fuel system is Bosch equipment, with fuel heating in the coarse and fine filters and in the intake.
The chassis is built for comfort and stability. Air suspension at the rear allowed a low fifth wheel, at 1,150 to 1,200 mm, which in turn permits higher semi-trailers; anti-roll bars on the front axle and on the driven axle keep the outfit steady in corners, and a lockable inter-axle differential helps on snow and ice. The rear axle is a FAW unit, the tyres are 315/60 R22.5 on a 700-litre tank, and the cab, 1,680 mm high inside, has two berths, a panoramic windscreen, pneumatically suspended seats, an autonomous Air Top 2000 heater, a tilting hydraulic system, a DAF-style lower waistline and a high roof and roof fairing by Avtodizain.
The specification list reads like a catalogue of the components available to a Russian haulier in the early 2010s: Schwitzer or 7C-6 turbochargers, a viscous fan coupling, a silencer from the 6520, plastic air lines, an adjustable steering column with an anti-theft device, GF SK-S 36.20/185 or JOST JSK 37C185 fifth wheels with a 50 mm pin, Petroplast plastic mudguards and a towing eye. The tractor also appeared on screen in the third season of the television series «Dalnoboyshchiki», in which a 5460-076-63 was used.
