History of the KamAZ-54115

The 54115 belongs to the second generation of KamAZ trucks and was produced from 2000 to 2012. It was the direct successor of the first-generation KamAZ-5410 tractor, and a number of design changes raised its carrying capacity well beyond that of the older lorry: the fifth-wheel load grew to twelve tonnes and the permitted semi-trailer weight to 26,850 kg, for a train weight of 34,400 kg.

Externally the new tractor differs from the 5410 mainly in the arrangement of the units behind the cab. The spare wheel, the air filter, the air receivers and a single fuel tank instead of two were repositioned, and the disc-less wheels on five clamps gave way to disc wheels on ten studs. Some of these changes also reached the late-series 5410, and the 54115 was fitted with the «high» cab as standard.

The lorry weighs 7,400 kg empty and is powered by the KamAZ-740.31-240, the turbocharged 10.85-litre V8 in Euro 2 form rated at 176 kW, or 240 hp. A ten-speed manual gearbox passes the drive to the rear bogie, the tyres are 10.00 R20, and the tractor reaches 90 km/h, climbs an 18 per cent gradient and turns in 9 m. Four modifications were listed: the 54115-010, the 54115-010-13, the 54115-011-13 and the 54115-911, the last with a larger 500-litre tank alongside the standard 350-litre one.

The 54115 is also remembered for its screen career: it was the truck of the main characters in the Russian television series «Dalnoboyshchiki», driven first by Anton and Yurko and later by Fyodor, Sashok and the twins Pyotr and Pavel Marchuk, one example carrying a Russian flag on the bonnet and a statue of the goddess Nike on the roof. In miniature the tractor has been made in 1:43 by Bauer of China, with further licences issued by KamAZ to Avtoistoriya and AVD Models, and Elecon has announced a model of its own.
