History of the KamAZ-53212
The 53212 was the lengthened version of the basic KamAZ-5320 and was built on the KamAZ-53213 chassis. It entered production in 1978, two years after the first KamAZ trucks, and stayed on the line until 2001. It was meant above all for working as a road train, usually with the GKB-8352 trailer of the same size class, which is why the flatbed grew to 6,090 by 2,420 mm and the gross weight to 18,225 kg.
The body is a metal platform with folding side and rear boards, a wooden floor and provision for a tarpaulin. The cab is the three-seat tilting type over the engine, with noise and heat insulation, seat-belt anchorages, a sleeping place, a sprung driver’s seat adjustable for the driver’s weight, length and backrest angle, and an engine pre-heater. The cab could be ordered with or without a berth depending on the version.
Under the cab the 53212 used the KamAZ-740.10 or the more powerful KamAZ-740.20, both V8 diesels of 10.85 litres, with outputs between 154 and 161 kW, that is 210 to 220 hp. The gearbox was the KamAZ-15, a five-speed unit with a two-speed splitter, and the final drive was 6.53. The lorry reached 90 km/h, climbed a 30 per cent gradient and turned in 9.8 m, carried 250 litres of fuel and used about 25 litres per 100 km. The electrical system ran on 24 volts from two 190 Ah batteries with a 28 V, 1,000 W generator.
The long flatbed was popular enough to be remembered in miniature: the Elecon works in Kazan still makes a 1:43 model of the 53212 and of its special versions, the tanker and the fire appliance built on the KamAZ-53213 chassis.
