History of the KamAZ-5511
The 5511 is the tipper of the first KamAZ generation and shares its cab, engine and running gear with the KamAZ-5320 flatbed. It was built from 1977 to 1997, with the chassis assembled in Naberezhnye Chelny and the tipping equipment mounted at Neftekamsk. Production may still continue in North Korea, which has long assembled KamAZ trucks of this generation.
The lorry weighs 8,850 kg empty, carries ten tonnes and has a gross weight of 17,400 kg. Its engine is the KamAZ-740, the naturally aspirated 10.85-litre V8 of 154 kW, or 210 hp, with an oil system holding 33.2 litres; the gearbox is a five-speed manual. Fuel consumption is quoted at 27 litres per 100 km in summer and 30 in winter, the top speed is 90 km/h, the gradient capability 25 per cent and the turning circle 9 m, a tight figure that made the tipper usable on building sites in town.
The tipping body holds 6.6 cubic metres and tips to the rear to an angle of 60 degrees, enough to shed sticky loads such as clay. The cab sits over the engine, has a high roof and no sleeping place, which reflects the tipper’s role as a day vehicle. The wheels carry 9.00 R20 tyres, changed to 10.00 R20 in 1996, the last year of production.
The 5511 also has a place in the history of Soviet modelling: the 1:43 scale model of the tipper became the first mass-produced lorry miniature in the USSR and the first model made by the Kazan works Elecon (then AREK). The miniature is still produced, now also by the Chinese firm Avtopark, and Elecon has made the later 55111-005 while Bauer of China offers the 55115.

KamAZ-5511 versions
- KamAZ-5511: the standard tipper of 1977–1997.
- 1996 specification: the version with 10.00 R20 tyres.
- North Korean production: possible continued assembly of the type.
- Elecon model: the 1:43 miniature that started Soviet truck modelling.
- Later miniatures: the 55111-005 by Elecon and the 55115 by Bauer.
The 5511 is the tipper version of the KamAZ-5320 and was followed by the KamAZ-55111; the heavier KamAZ-65115 came later. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
