History of the KamAZ-4308

The KamAZ-4308 belongs to the lighter end of the KamAZ range: a two-axle flatbed of 11.5 tonnes gross weight, designed for regional and urban delivery rather than for construction sites. The truck has been built since 2007 and is assembled at the plant in Naberezhnye Chelny. Its cab sits above the engine and has a high roof, but no sleeping place, since the vehicle is intended for day work; the body is a flatbed with folding sides and the wheels are single-tyre discs of 245/70 R19.5.

Under the cab is a Cummins B5.9 180 CIV-0, a 5.9-litre inline six with turbocharging and charge-air cooling in Euro 2 specification. It produces 131 kW, or 178 hp, which is enough for a 5.5-tonne payload and a top speed of 105 km/h. The standard gearbox is the six-speed ZF 6S1000; a six-speed Allison Transmission 3000 automatic was offered as an option, an arrangement that suits municipal and distribution work with frequent stops.

The chassis is compact for a lorry of this class: the turning circle is 8.5 m and the vehicle can climb a 25 per cent gradient, while fuel consumption is quoted at 14 litres per 100 km. Two further versions have been listed by the maker: the KamAZ-4308-5S, which runs on compressed natural gas, and the KamAZ-4308-69, a member of the newer G5 generation of KamAZ trucks.

Design and features

  • Cab over the engine: a high-roof day cab without a berth, which keeps the overall length down in town.
  • Cummins B5.9: a 5.9-litre inline-six turbodiesel of 178 hp in Euro 2 form.
  • Gearbox choice: the six-speed ZF 6S1000 as standard, with an Allison 3000 automatic as an option.
  • Compact footprint: an 8.5 m turning circle and a 25 per cent grade capability.
  • Gas version: the 4308-5S runs on compressed natural gas.

KamAZ-4308 versions

  • KamAZ-4308: the standard flatbed with the Cummins B5.9 and a six-speed manual gearbox.
  • KamAZ-4308 with Allison: the same truck with a six-speed automatic transmission.
  • KamAZ-4308-5S: a version converted to run on compressed natural gas.
  • KamAZ-4308-69: a model of the G5 generation.

The larger KamAZ-43253 sits above the 4308 in the range, and the heavier three-axle KamAZ-65115 is the plant’s best-known tipper. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
