History of the KamAZ-6350

The 6350 is part of the «Mustang» family of unified all-wheel-drive military trucks, together with the two-axle KamAZ-4350 and the three-axle KamAZ-5350. It is a flatbed tractor with the 8×8 layout, in production since 2003, and it represents the heaviest member of that family: 12,400 kg empty, 10,500 kg of payload and a gross weight of 22,600 kg, with a trailer of up to 15 tonnes behind it.

Its dimensions are those of a true off-road machine. The lorry is 9,850 mm long and 2,500 mm wide, stands 3,080 mm high by the cab and 3,260 mm by the tilt, and rides on a wheelbase of 1,940 plus 3,340 plus 1,320 mm with 390 mm of ground clearance and 425/85 R21 tyres. It climbs a 31 degree slope and traverses a 20 degree side slope, fords 1.74 m of water, crosses a 1.4 m trench and climbs a 0.55 m vertical step, while its turning circle of 13.9 m is modest for a four-axle vehicle. The engine is the KamAZ-740.50-360, a turbocharged 11.76-litre V8 in Euro 2 form producing 265 kW, or 360 hp, at 2,200 rpm and 1,470 Nm; the gearbox is either a sixteen-speed ZF or the plant’s own eight-speed KamAZ-161, and 375 litres of fuel are carried in the tanks.

The type has been used by armies rather than by civilian fleets. The United Arab Emirates had the KamAZ-6350 in service in its army from 2006, and Russia uses it and its derivatives. The KamAZ-63501AT «Medved», a general-purpose chassis built in series since 2004, is the best-known development: its three-seat tilting cab can be fitted with an extra berth on request, and the type has served as the basis for the 9A52-4 prototype of the Smerch rocket system shown at MAKS-2007 with a six-round pack, and for an artillery tractor for 152 mm guns of up to 12 tonnes with an IM-50 crane, armour of the fifth class for the cab and crew compartment, and accommodation for seven besides the driver.

KamAZ-6350 versions

The family also includes the two-axle KamAZ-4350 and the three-axle KamAZ-5350, none of them on this site yet; the armoured KamAZ-43269 is the other military KamAZ described here. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
