History of the KamAZ-65224

The 65224 was developed on the chassis of the KamAZ-6522 and is the all-wheel-drive version of that heavy family. Everything about it is specified for long runs away from paved roads: Michelin tyres, a 550-litre fuel tank for long distances, a cab with a sleeping place and, throughout the model’s history, a fuel injection pump from Robert Bosch GmbH, lockable inter-axle and cross-axle differentials, a tachograph and the other equipment expected of a modern lorry.

The diesel is the KamAZ-740.632-400, a V8 rated at 400 hp, and the transmission comes from ZF Friedrichshafen. That combination of a powerful engine with a driven front axle is what allows the truck to work where ordinary construction vehicles cannot follow: in logging, on oil fields and on the unpaved roads of the north.

Besides the Russian armed forces, which use the type, the 65224 is operated as a timber truck, as a flatbed tractor with an IM 320-05 loader crane and as the ATS 8-40 fire engine. Its closest rival within the range is the KamAZ-65225 tractor unit, which uses a similar heavy chassis but is intended for semi-trailers on the road rather than for cross-country work.

Design and features

  • All-wheel drive: a 6×6 chassis derived from the KamAZ-6522.
  • 400 hp V8: the KamAZ-740.632-400 with a Bosch injection pump.
  • Long range: a 550-litre fuel tank and a sleeper cab for distant work.
  • Lockable differentials: both between the axles and between the wheels.
  • Many roles: army transport, timber truck, crane carrier and fire engine.

KamAZ-65224 versions

  • KamAZ-65224: the basic all-wheel-drive chassis.
  • Timber truck: the logging version with a timber body.
  • Flatbed with IM 320-05: a tractor with a loader crane.
  • ATS 8-40: the fire engine built on the chassis.

The KamAZ-65225 is its closest relative and rival in the range, and the heavy KamAZ-6520 is the tipper of the same family. More trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
