History of the KamAZ-43114

Work on the 43114 began in 1991, while its predecessor was still in production, and series manufacture started in 1995. The engine output rose from 220 to 240 hp without a change in displacement or cylinder count, and the payload stayed at six tonnes; a five-tonne version was no longer offered, while the kerb weight grew by almost a tonne. The Russian Wikipedia gives 1996 as the first year of production and 2014 as the last, which fits the slow run-out of the model.

The cab is a high-roof, three-seat cab over the engine, available with or without a sleeping place depending on the version. Behind it is a steel flatbed with folding sides measuring 4,800 by 2,320 mm with 500 mm walls, and the wheels carry single 425/85 R21 tyres. The truck reaches 90 km/h, climbs a 31 per cent gradient and turns in 11.3 m. The gearbox is a ten-speed manual, which gives the close ratios needed for a loaded six-by-six on bad roads.

The value of the 43114 lay as much in its chassis as in the lorry itself. The 43114 chassis was widely used by the armed forces and the oil and gas industry for tankers, hydraulic lifts, vans and pipe-carrying trains. KamAZ also listed a seven-tonne 43115, the TZ-7-43114 aircraft refueller of 7,000 litres, the NefAZ-4208 body for carrying people, the AP-2 fire engine and the ARS-14K mobile filling station. From 2008 production was scaled down in favour of the similar KamAZ-5350, and by mid-2016 only the heavier successor, the KamAZ-43118, was still offered to civil customers.

Design and features

  • More power: 240 hp from the 10.85-litre V8, twenty horsepower up on the late 4310.
  • Ten-speed gearbox: close ratios for heavy loads away from paved roads.
  • Single off-road tyres: 425/85 R21 on all six wheels.
  • Chassis for superstructures: tankers, lifts, vans, fire engines and pipe trains were all built on it.
  • Cab choice: the same high-roof cab with or without a berth.

KamAZ-43114 versions

  • KamAZ-43114: the basic flatbed with six tonnes of payload.
  • KamAZ-43115: a version rated at seven tonnes of payload.
  • TZ-7-43114: an aircraft refuelling tanker of 7,000 litres.
  • NefAZ-4208: a personnel body on the chassis, also built as a combination bus.
  • AP-2 (43114): a fire engine, one of several fire appliances on this chassis.
  • ARS-14K and ARS-14KM: mobile filling stations.

The 43114 succeeded the KamAZ-4310 and was itself replaced by the KamAZ-43118. Its two-axle relative is the KamAZ-4326; more trucks are in the KamAZ collection.
