History of the Jelcz 120M

The 120M was presented and put into production in 1992 as a modernisation of the PR110M, which was then the most widespread city bus in Poland. The most visible change was a new plastic outer panel in the upper part of the front wall, framing the destination display, together with a smaller rear window. The interior was altered only slightly: two seats opposite the third door made way for standing passengers, and the first step at the third door was lowered by 20 mm.

The most important change was under the floor. The modernised turbocharged WS Mielec SWT 11/300/1 engine developed 162 kW (220 hp) and drove through a Polish four-speed S4-95 gearbox. Compared with the PR110, the final drive was made faster, 5.86 and from 1994 5.125, which raised the top speed and cut fuel consumption by more than ten litres per 100 km against the PR110U. In the same year the range was joined by the 120MM with a MAN D2866UH engine of 184 kW (250 hp) and a four-speed 4HP-500 automatic, and a prototype 120MV with a Volvo THD102KB of 180 kW (245 hp) was built but never produced in series.

The 120MM was replaced in 1993 by the 120MM/1 with a MAN D0826LUH05 engine of 169 kW (230 hp) that met the Euro-1 emission standard, and an automatic ZF 4HP-500, or a five-speed 5HP-500, became available on the standard car. A 1994 prototype introduced a modernised body with bonded side windows and a plastic rear wall, and in 1995 three prototypes were unified with the new M121M. Series production of the modernised body began in 1996, a further facelift with a large panoramic windscreen arrived in 1997, and the 120MM/2 followed in 1998. In 1999 Jelcz showed the 120MD, 120M/2 LPG and 120M/3, the 120M/1 CNG came in 2000, and the M120MM/3 with a MAN D0836DUH03 engine and the M101I front and rear walls appeared in 2003. The 120M with the Mielec engine was withdrawn that year, the 120M/3 and M120I followed in 2004, and the last of the line was the M120M/4 CNG of 2006. Door layouts of 2-0-2 were offered from 1993 and 2-2-0 from 1999.

Design and features

  • Modernised PR110M: a plastic front panel for the destination display and a smaller rear window.
  • Mielec turbo diesel: 162 kW (220 hp) with a four-speed S4-95 gearbox.
  • Faster final drive: 5.86 then 5.125, for a higher top speed and lower fuel consumption.
  • Long model life: the standard bus until 2003, the variants until 2007, with CNG and LPG versions.

Jelcz 120M versions

  • 120M: the standard bus with the Mielec SWT 11/300/1 engine, 1992-2003.
  • 120MM and 120MM/1: MAN-engined versions with automatic transmission.
  • 120M/1 CNG and 120M/2 LPG: gas-fuelled variants from 1998.
  • 120M/3 and M120I: the final versions with MAN and Iveco engines, 1999-2007.

The 120M was the direct successor of the Jelcz PR110 and shared its body technology with the low-floor Jelcz M121M. More buses are in the Jelcz collection.
