History of the IZh-2717
A commercial version of the Oda

The IZh-2717 belongs to the second generation of Izhevsk passenger cars and replaced the IZh-2715 as the plant’s light commercial vehicle. It was created on the basis of the IZh-2126 saloon, but its suspension was adapted to carrying loads: ground clearance was raised to 230 mm, the coil-sprung trailing-arm rear suspension of the passenger car gave way to leaf springs, and tyres of higher load rating were fitted, which raised the payload to 650 kg. Two gas struts hold the rear door open, and the front suspension is independent, of MacPherson type. The gearbox is a five-speed manual.
Two engines were most common: the UZAM-3317 of 1,700 cc and 85 hp, and the VAZ-2106 of 1,600 cc and 74.5 hp. Production was modest compared with the old 2715: the IZh-27171 pickup version accounted for 3,695 vehicles between 1995 and 2005, within a family total of 230,781 cars that also included the 2126 Oda and its estate and hatchback derivatives.
Versions
The IZh-27171 was the pickup without a fixed upper body, available to order with a removable fabric hood. The IZh-27171-062 (carburettor), -063 (injection) and -064 (diesel), sold as the Okhotnik, used the 1.8-litre VAZ-2130 engine and four-wheel drive built from the units of the IZh-2126-060, with a lengthened cab that included a place for a dog. A further version, the LuAZ IZh-2717-90, had passenger seats and windows in the cargo part and was assembled at the Lutsk car plant in Ukraine.
The IZh-27175 that followed
When the 2126 and 2717 went out of production in 2005, Izhevsk replaced the latter with the IZh-27175, built on the body family of the VAZ-2105, 2107 and 2104 and made until 17 September 2012. A large proportion of parts was unified with AvtoVAZ products, which made the vehicle reliable, simple to service and cheap to run, and the body was painted by cathodic electrocoating for better resistance to wear. Carburettor engines were used until 2006: the 1.5-litre VAZ-2103 and the 1.6-litre VAZ-2106. From 2006 to 2007 came the 1.6-litre 21067-10 with distributed injection and Euro-2 emission standard, from 2007 to 2009 the 21067-20 with Euro-3, and from 2009 to the end of production the 21067-30, also Euro-3.
Design and features
- Loads first: leaf springs, 230 mm of ground clearance and a 650 kg payload, against the passenger car’s softer set-up.
- Oda cabin and nose: the same body front as the hatchback, so parts and service were familiar.
- Practical details: gas struts on the rear door and a five-speed gearbox.
- Four-wheel-drive Okhotnik: a 1.8-litre VAZ-2130 engine and 2126-060 transmission for rough ground and hunting.
- A Ukrainian sister: the LuAZ-built IZh-2717-90 with seats and windows in the cargo body.
IZh-2717 versions
- IZh-2717 panel van: the closed commercial body.
- IZh-27171 pickup: open body without a hard top, with an optional fabric hood; 3,695 built.
- IZh-27171-062/-063/-064 Okhotnik: four-wheel drive, VAZ-2130 1.8 engine, longer cab with a dog place.
- LuAZ IZh-2717-90: passenger version with windows, assembled at Lutsk in Ukraine.
- IZh-27175 (2005–2012): successor on VAZ-2105/2107/2104 bodies with VAZ engines.
The pickup shares its body and cabin with the IZh-2126 Oda and replaced the older IZh-2715. Its engines came from the Izhevsk IZh-412 line and from VAZ. More are in the IZh collection.
