The Iveco TurboStar is a heavy lorry and tractor unit that Iveco produced from 1984. It was presented as the heir of the earlier Iveco Turbo series and was sold at first as the 190-33 and 190-42, which differed in their engines. More than 50,000 were built, which made it one of the best-selling Iveco lorries in Italy.

History of the Iveco Turbostar

The TurboStar was shown in 1984 as the successor of the Iveco Turbo series. At first it came as the 190-33 and the 190-42, which differed in their engines: a turbocharged and intercooled six-cylinder of 13,798 cc with 330 hp in the first, and a turbocharged 17,174 cc V8 without intercooler and 420 hp in the second. Both could be ordered with a 16-speed synchromesh ZF Ecosplit gearbox or a 13-speed quick-shift Fuller unit, and an automatic version was available on request.

Road tests were favourable. The magazine TuttoTrasporti tested the lorry in February 1985 and praised both the engine and the new cab, which was more comfortable than the one of the previous series. In 1987 the smaller model was replaced by the 190-36 with the engine uprated to 360 hp, and in 1990 the output rose again to 377 hp while the name stayed 190-36 for a while before becoming 190-38.

In 1989 Iveco added the 190-48, with a turbocharged and intercooled engine of 480 hp and either a ZF gearbox or an unsynchronised Eaton Twin Splitter. A special version of this model carried outside fairings, side skirts and a spoiler. The whole series was replaced by the Iveco EuroStar, presented in 1993.
