The Iveco 316 was an Italian city bus produced from 1978 to 2000. It was the urban version of the interurban Iveco 315 minibus: Iveco itself never built the bodywork, and the chassis went to outside coachbuilders. Two versions were made, the second with a turbocharged engine.

History of the Iveco 316

The 316 was presented in 1978 under the Fiat badge to replace the Fiat 314 in urban service. In practice it was the interurban 315 adapted to city work: Iveco built only the chassis, and the bodies came from outside firms, Portesi, Menarini, Viberti and Minerva, the last repeating the Viberti design. From 1983 the buses carried the Iveco badge alone.

The bus had 59 places, 17 of them seated, and a five-speed manual gearbox with reverse. There were two versions: the 316.8.13 with a naturally aspirated 5,499 cc Fiat six of 125 hp, made from 1978 to 1985, and the 316.8.18 with the turbocharged version of the same engine and 180 hp, made from 1985 to 2000.

Large fleets of the 316 served with ATACS in Salerno, ATAC in Rome and AMT in Genoa, along with many smaller operators. The last examples were built in 2000 and the type has since disappeared from service: although it was roomy and reliable, it was based on an interurban design and aged quickly in city use.

Design and features

  • Interurban origins: a 315 chassis adapted to city work rather than a clean-sheet city bus.
  • Coachbuilt bodies: Portesi, Menarini, Viberti and Minerva built all the bodywork.
  • Simple mechanics: a 5,499 cc Fiat six and a five-speed manual gearbox.
  • Turbo from 1985: the second version raised output from 125 to 180 hp.

Iveco 316 versions

  • 316.8.13 (1978–1985): naturally aspirated 125 hp engine.
  • 316.8.18 (1985–2000): turbocharged 180 hp engine.
  • Viberti and Minerva bodies: the two designs were closely related, Minerva repeating the Viberti styling.
  • Menarini and Portesi bodies: alternative Italian coachwork on the same chassis.

The interurban version was the Iveco 315, and the larger coach of the same years was the Iveco 370. More Iveco buses are in the Iveco collection.
