History of the Isuzu Giga

First generation (1994)

The Giga was introduced in 1994 as the successor to the Isuzu 810. Early trucks came as box trucks, tractor trailers and dump trucks, with new high gross weights of 22 and 25 tonnes, and they had bumper-mounted headlights, a design that later became common across the industry. Several trim levels were offered, from basic to luxury. Over the years the range took heavy design refreshes and safety upgrades: in 1997 it became the first large truck line to include SRS airbags and HID headlights as standard, and the engines moved from V-type units to more efficient straight-sixes and turbodiesels to meet tighter emissions and noise rules.

Emissions and electronics

Between 2000 and 2007 the changes concentrated on emissions compliance, safety standards, redesigned grilles and bumpers, and new technology: radar-based distance warning and cruise control were available by 2007, when electronic stability control was added to tractor models, older engines were dropped and a collision damage mitigation braking system was developed. In 2009 the mirrors and turn signals were redesigned for international rules and a side-monitoring feature was added. A major update in 2010 brought SCR with DPD emissions technology, a standardised 6UZ1 engine, improved cooling and lighting through a cab redesign, a new 16-speed transmission for dump trucks and new wheel standards.

Second generation (2015)

The second-generation Giga was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show with a redesigned cab shared with the Forward and Elf, improved aerodynamics, a new interior with digital displays and steering controls, and fuel-saving technology such as Smart Glide. Between 2015 and 2018 CNG versions, new tractor models, the 6NX1 engine, LED lighting and special editions such as the 80th Anniversary model followed. From 2019 to 2021 the emphasis moved to safety, with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot and driver monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and an emergency driving stop system, alongside higher roofs and premium seating. In 2025 the Giga became the first heavy-duty truck in Japan with a wheel detachment warning system standard on all models. A third generation, based on the UD Quon, was introduced in March 2023 for semi-trucks only, and by 2022 the second generation had been launched in Japan, China and Malaysia.

Design and features

  • Airbags first: standard SRS airbags and HID headlights from 1997.
  • Bumper-mounted lights: a Giga feature later copied across the industry.
  • Driver assistance: radar distance warning, stability control, adaptive cruise and emergency stop systems.
  • Shared cab: the second generation uses the cab of the Forward and Elf.

Isuzu Giga versions

  • First generation (1994–2015): V-type engines, later 6UZ1.
  • Second generation (2015–): new cab, Smart Glide and advanced safety systems.
  • Third generation (2023–): UD Quon-based semi-trucks.
  • Rigid models: CVR 4×2, CXK and CXM 6×2, CXZ 6×4, CXH 8×4.
