Husqvarna was founded near Huskvarna in Sweden in 1689 as a maker of muskets, and began building motorcycles in 1903 as a subsidiary of the armament firm. The first machines used imported engines until the company opened its own engine factory in 1916.
The motorcycle division was sold to Cagiva in 1987 and bought by BMW Motorrad in 2007; since 2013 it has belonged to the KTM group. Today the company is Austrian, owned by the Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto through KTM AG.
