The Case 2670 was introduced in 1972 together with the 2470 as one of the new Traction King four-wheel-drive tractors. Its distinguishing ideas were equal-sized wheels at both ends and steering on both axles.

History of the Case 2670

The Traction King idea

Case introduced the 2470 and 2670 in 1972 as four-wheel-drive tractors with equal-sized wheels and four-wheel steering. Equal wheels on all four corners were the point of the design: the machine pulls with its full weight instead of carrying a heavy front axle, and steering on both axles keeps the turning circle of a very large tractor manageable.

Case in 1972

The company that built it was in the middle of a change of shape. Tenneco had bought Case in 1967 and owned it outright from 1970, and in 1972 Case also took over David Brown Tractors of Yorkshire. Construction machinery was the larger half of the business and the farm tractors were the second.

After the Traction King

The four-wheel-drive line was taken further in 1986, when Case IH bought Steiger and built its big four-wheel-drive tractors under that name, and again in 1997 with the Quadtrac, which replaced the four wheels with four rubber track units. The 2670 stands at the start of that story rather than the end.

Design and features

  • Equal-sized wheels: all four corners carried the same size of wheel, a deliberate four-wheel-drive layout.
  • Four-wheel steering: both axles steered, which shortens the turning circle of a big tractor.
  • Traction King name: the 2470 and 2670 of 1972 carried the Traction King name in the Case range.
  • Start of a line: the tractors came before Case’s Steiger and Quadtrac four-wheel-drive machines.

Case 2670 versions

  • Case 2470 (1972): the companion model, introduced at the same time.
  • Case 2670 (1972): the larger of the pair described here.
  • Steiger four-wheel-drive tractors: the line Case IH bought in 1986.
  • Quadtrac (from 1997): the four-track successor to the four-wheel-drive idea.

The smaller big tractors of the range are on the page for the Case 1370, and the modern line on the Case IH Magnum page. More machines are in the Case section.
