History of the Yamaha Cygnus

The Cygnus appeared in 1995 as a practical 125 cc scooter. Its single-cylinder four-stroke engine was air-cooled and produced 8 kW, a modest output aimed at everyday transport rather than sport.

In 2004 Yamaha restyled the scooter and renamed it Cygnus X. The most important change under the bodywork was the switch from a carburettor to fuel injection, which allowed the model to meet the Euro 3 emissions standard. The Cygnus X became the name most riders know.

In several markets the same scooter was sold with the MBK badge, first as the Flame and later as the New Flame. That made the Cygnus one of the models through which Yamaha and MBK shared their small-scooter range in Europe.

Design and features

  • Four-stroke economy: a simple air-cooled 125 cc engine aimed at daily use.
  • Cygnus X update: the 2004 restyling gave the scooter a new look and a new name.
  • Fuel injection: the change from carburettor to injection brought Euro 3 compliance.
  • MBK versions: the Flame and New Flame sold the same scooter under a second brand.

Yamaha Cygnus versions
