The Lada Niva, known as the VAZ-2121, the Lada 4×4 and since 2021 as the Niva Legend, is a small four-wheel-drive off-roader designed and built by AvtoVAZ since 1977. It was the world’s first mass-produced off-road vehicle with unibody construction and has been in continuous production for decades. By the end of 2020 an estimated 650,000 had been sold worldwide.

History of the Lada Niva
Prototypes
The Niva was described by its designers as a Renault 5 put on a Land Rover chassis. Development began in 1971 after the 24th Congress of the Communist Party, when Premier Alexei Kosygin gave VAZ and AZLK the task of creating a car for rural areas, because the usual Zhiguli, Moskvitch and Zaporozhets were of little use in isolated parts of the USSR. A team led by Vladimir Solovyev worked on a civilised four-wheel-drive vehicle, partly inspired by the IZh-14 prototype of 1974. It was VAZ’s first model not based on a Fiat, although many of its mechanics came from the earlier Zhiguli models, mostly the VAZ-2103 and 2106. The first prototype of 1971, the E-2121, was nicknamed krokodil for its front end and was rejected as too utilitarian; doors and a hardtop were added, and the 2E-2121 of 1973 used a modern hatchback body inspired by the VAZ-1101. The 1974 prototype, the VAZ-2121M, was derived from the VAZ-2103 with its 1,452 cc engine. A trial with the Moskvich 1,478 cc engine failed, and the appearance of the VAZ-2106 at the end of 1975 delayed production while another prototype was developed in 1976.

Testing
Before production the Niva was tested for years by a team led by Vadim Kotlyarov in the hardest terrain of the Soviet Union: the Ural Mountains and Siberia, the deserts of the Kazakh SSR and the Pamir Mountains. There it was compared with its military counterpart, the UAZ-469, and with Western off-roaders such as the Land Rover Series and the Range Rover Classic. Its ability came from permanent four-wheel drive with a transfer case and central differential lock, a short 2.2 m wheelbase, a weight of just over a tonne, independent front suspension, compact dimensions of 3.74 by 1.68 m, ground clearance of about 265 mm and large but narrow 175/80 R16 tyres with Voltyre VLI-5 tread. In the 1973 and 1974 trials it climbed a 58% slope and crossed 60 cm of water and 100 cm of mud and snow.
Production and names
The Niva has been built since 1977 and is the predecessor of most modern crossover SUVs, which are similarly built around a single body and frame. In the 1990s the range gained three- and five-door wagons on a wheelbase 50 cm longer and an extra-long-wheelbase pick-up. After the original Land Rover and its successor, the Defender, were discontinued in 2016, the Niva became the longest-production-run off-road light vehicle still manufactured in its original form. It has been sold under many names: Lada Sport in Iceland, Lada Taiga in Austria, Lada Cossack in the United Kingdom and Lada 4×4 in Russia from 2014. In August 2020 Lada took over production of the 2003 Chevrolet Niva and rebranded it as the new Lada Niva, then renamed it the Niva Travel in December 2020, while the original model became the Niva Legend in January 2021.
Design and features
- Unibody construction: the first mass-produced off-roader of this type, an idea later adopted by crossover SUVs.
- Permanent four-wheel drive: a transfer case and a lockable centre differential gave it real off-road ability.
- Compact and light: short wheelbase, low weight and high ground clearance made it agile on rough ground.
- Narrow high-profile tyres: 175/80 R16 wheels put strong pressure on the ground and reduced the chance of bogging down.
- Proven mechanicals: the engine and many parts came from the VAZ-2106, so servicing was simple.
Lada Niva versions
- VAZ-2121 (from 1977): the original three-door model.
- VAZ-2131: five-door version on a longer wheelbase, added in the 1990s.
- Pick-up: extra-long-wheelbase commercial body style.
- Lada 4×4 and Niva Legend: later names for the same car in Russia.
- Niva Travel: the former Chevrolet Niva, a separate model rebranded in 2020.
The Niva borrowed its engine from the VAZ-2106 and was the first VAZ design not based on the VAZ-2101 platform. More models are in the VAZ collection.
