History of the Triumph Tiger
A name shared across companies
Triumph Tiger is not one motorcycle but a name used by several machines from the old British company Triumph Engineering and by its modern successor Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. The earlier Tiger models were made before 1982, when the Meriden business ended; the name then returned on the new Hinckley range.

The modern Hinckley Tigers
Since 1993 the modern company has used the name on a series of models. The first was the Tiger 900 with the T400 engine, built between 1993 and 1998, followed by the Tiger 955i from 2001 to 2006. The Tiger 1050 arrived in 2007 and the Tiger 800 in 2010, while the larger Tiger Explorer 1200 has been built since 2012.
The current range
The present line-up includes the Tiger 900 of 2020, the Tiger Explorer 1200, and the two sport-touring members of the family, the Tiger Sport 660 from 2022 and the Tiger Sport 800 from 2025.
Earlier models
Before 1982 the name had been used by Triumph Engineering on a number of machines, including the Tiger 100 and Tiger Cub, which are covered in their own articles here.
