The Tatra T816 is a truck family produced by the Czech company Tatra. It uses the traditional Tatra concept of a rigid backbone tube and swinging half-axles giving independent suspension, and it was developed from the Tatra 815 to cope with the most demanding off-road conditions. Although the range was originally created for military use, civilian applications are now available, notably heavy off-road firefighting trucks.

History of the Tatra 816
A military development of the 815
The T816 was developed from the Tatra 815 to comply with the most demanding off-road conditions. The family keeps the traditional Tatra layout: a rigid backbone tube with swinging half-axles that give independent suspension, in vehicles available as 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, 10×8, 10×10, 12×8 and 12×12 variants. The range was originally developed for military purposes, but civilian applications are now offered as well, most notably heavy off-road firefighting trucks.
Armax and Force
The T816 family has two categories. The T816 Armax range is more similar to the civilian T815 TerrN°1 range but optimised for military use, and it uses Tatra air-cooled engines and gearboxes. The T816 Force range offers the heaviest trucks, customised for the respective military customers, and uses water-cooled engines and gearboxes of other manufacturers. The split lets Tatra offer a purely Tatra-powered vehicle for customers who want the traditional air-cooled layout and a heavy-duty alternative built around bought-in powertrains.
Design and features
- Backbone chassis: rigid central tube with independent swinging half-axles.
- Two ranges: Armax with Tatra power, Force with bought-in water-cooled units.
- Military focus: heavy off-road use, with civilian firefighting versions.
- Many layouts: from 4×4 to 12×12.
Tatra 816 versions
- T816 Armax: Tatra air-cooled engines and gearboxes, close to the civilian TerrN°1.
- T816 Force: heaviest military trucks with water-cooled engines and gearboxes.
- Civilian off-road firefighting trucks: a non-military application of the family.
The 816 was developed from the Tatra 815, which itself replaced the Tatra 813. More trucks are in the Tatra collection.
