History of the Scania S-series

A new generation

Scania signed a deal with Porsche Engineering in August 2010 to develop a completely new truck cab. From early 2014 masked prototypes were seen on roads in Sweden, Spain and Norway. The result was launched as the second generation of the truck range at the Grand Palais in Paris on 23 August 2016, with a new R-series sleeper cab and the all-new S-series sleeper cab, which offered a flat interior floor. Other cab heights, including the R-series day cab, were to follow later.

Public debut

The first public display of the new generation came on 24 August 2016 at the Elmia Lastbil fair in Jönköpings. The S-series was presented there as the flagship of the range, the model that showed what the new flat-floor cab could do for long-distance drivers.

Equipment

The second-generation range features two touchscreen infotainment systems: the Base package with a 5-inch screen and the Premium package with a larger 7-inch screen. In April 2017 the Premium package gained support for Apple CarPlay for the first time.

The range around it

The S-series was the first model of the new generation, but not the only one. The range also includes the second-generation R-series, and in December 2017 Scania added a low-entry version of the second generation, the L-series. The trucks of both generations are available with engines from a 9-litre inline five to a 16-litre V8, the V8 only in the higher models.

Design and features

  • Flat floor: the first Scania cab with no engine tunnel between the seats.
  • Sleeper cab: launched in Paris alongside the new R-series sleeper.
  • Touchscreen infotainment: 5-inch Base and 7-inch Premium packages.
  • CarPlay: added to the Premium package in April 2017.

Scania S-series versions

  • S-series sleeper (2016): the original flat-floor model.
  • Base package: 5-inch touchscreen infotainment.
  • Premium package: 7-inch screen, with Apple CarPlay from April 2017.

The other member of the second generation is the new Scania R-series, and the first generation began with the Scania P-series. The trucks the range replaced are in Scania 4-series, and more vehicles are in the Scania collection.
