History of the Renault DeZir

The show car

The DeZir was officially presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show as Renault’s zero-emissions design study. It is a two-seat coupé whose butterfly doors open conventionally on the driver’s side and as a suicide door on the passenger’s side, with an interior trimmed in red leather.

Electric running gear

A mid-mounted electric motor produced 148 hp and 226 N·m, sent to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission. Renault claimed 0–60 mph in five seconds, a governed top speed of 112 mph and a range of 99 miles.

The racing descendant

The Renault Sport R.S. 01 race car was based on the DeZir and ran originally in Renault’s own one-make Renault Sport Trophy series before racing in the Group GT3 class. Unlike the concept it has a petrol engine, using Nissan’s 3.8-litre VR38DETT V6 tuned by Nismo to about 500 hp for track regulations. The DeZir also appears as a playable car in video games including Asphalt, Driveclub and Real Racing 3.

Design and features

  • Butterfly doors: conventional on one side, a suicide door on the other.
  • Mid-mounted motor: 148 hp and 226 N·m driving the rear wheels.
  • Zero emissions: a battery-electric show car with a quoted 159 km range.
  • R.S. 01 link: the later GT3-spec racer was developed from this shape.

Renault DeZir versions

  • DeZir (2010): the electric concept.
  • Renault Sport R.S. 01: racing car derived from the DeZir, with a 3.8-litre Nissan V6.

The DeZir’s shape led to the Renault Sport Trophy racer, and its electric ideas sit alongside the production Renault Zoe. Other concepts are on the Altica and Frendzy pages; more Renaults are in the Renault collection.
