History of the Renault Altica
A practical sports concept
The Altica was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006 as a study that combined coupé looks with estate practicality: four seats, butterfly doors and 1,300 litres of luggage capacity. The body is a three-door shooting brake, a shape Renault has used for several of its design studies.

Diesel performance
Its two-litre diesel produced 177 bhp and 380 N·m of torque, enough for 0–60 mph in 7.5 seconds, while CO2 emissions were quoted at 140 g/km for the class, helped by the car’s aerodynamics.
The Synthetic Jet
The car’s most unusual feature is a patented aerodynamic device called the Synthetic Jet: a two-millimetre slot at the extreme rear of the roof through which air is alternately sucked and blown to control the separation of airflow depending on speed. At 80 mph Renault claimed it reduced the car’s drag coefficient by 15 per cent, improving fuel economy.
Design and features
- Butterfly doors: a show-car entrance for a four-seat shooting brake.
- Diesel engine: 177 bhp and 380 N·m from a two-litre unit.
- Synthetic Jet: a roof-edge slot that manages airflow and cuts drag by up to 15 per cent.
- 1,300 litres: estate-level luggage space in a coupé-shaped body.
Renault Altica versions
- Altica (2006): the single concept car shown at Geneva.
The Altica’s aerodynamic ideas sit alongside those of the Renault R-Space concept, and other show cars are in the DeZir and Nepta pages. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
