History of the Renault Sport Trophy

Announcement and car

In 2014 Renault announced it would create a new one-make sports car championship and unveiled the race car, the Renault Sport R.S. 01, at the 2014 Moscow Motor Show. Developed by Renault Sport, it has a Gibson Technology-tuned 3.8-litre V6 twin-turbo engine supplied by Renault Sport’s Japanese partner Nismo and a chassis built by Dallara. The championship was to use a professional and gentleman driver combination.

Two seasons

The first season was held in 2015. The second and last was held in 2016, as a support event for the 2016 European Le Mans Series.

Format

The car is driven by a professional and gentleman pairing: the professionals compete for the Elite, or PRO, class championship and the gentlemen for the Prestige, or AM, class. As of 2016 the weekend consisted of one 60- or 90-minute race plus one lap, called the endurance race, in which the two drivers of each car shared the driving.

Design and features

  • R.S. 01: the Dallara-built race car with a Nismo-supplied 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6.
  • Pro-am format: professional and gentleman drivers sharing each car.
  • Two classes: Elite (PRO) and Prestige (AM).
  • Short life: only two seasons, 2015 and 2016.

Renault Sport Trophy versions

  • 2015 season: the first championship.
  • 2016 season: the final one, supporting the European Le Mans Series.

The series was run by Renault Sport, and its car was derived from the Renault DeZir concept. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
