History of the Renault FR1
A Renault Trucks coach
The FR1 was built by the bus division of Renault Trucks between 1987 and 1997. It was a single-decker intercity coach powered by a six-cylinder Renault engine of 9,834 cc, available in two outputs, 223 kW (303 PS) and 250 kW (340 PS).

Models and doors
The range was designated TE, TX and GTX, and customers could specify one or two doors, which let the coach be adapted to intercity work with a single front door or to busier routes with a second exit.
The Iliade
In 1997 the model was facelifted and renamed the Renault Iliade, which took over from the standard FR1. The FR1 is still remembered as one of the coaches of the last generation built under the Renault name before the bus business passed to Irisbus.
Design and features
- Big six-cylinder engine: 9,834 cc in 303 or 340 PS form.
- Three trim levels: TE, TX and GTX.
- One or two doors: specified to suit the operator’s route.
- Iliade facelift: the 1997 update that gave the coach a new name.
Renault FR1 versions
- FR1 TE: the entry model.
- FR1 TX: mid-range specification.
- FR1 GTX: the top specification.
- Renault Iliade: the facelifted car from 1997.
The Iliade followed the FR1, and Renault’s city buses of the period are on the Renault Agora and Renault R312 pages. More Renaults are in the Renault collection.
