History of the Pontiac Wave

One car, many badges

The Kalos was launched in 2002 as a subcompact developed by the then-independent Daewoo, later GM Korea. It was designed by Italdesign from the Kalos Dream concept of 2000 and built on the T200 platform, replacing the Daewoo Lanos. Under GM the car was marketed in 120 countries under seven brands, Chevrolet, Daewoo, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon, Suzuki and ZAZ, and it became the first generation of the Chevrolet Aveo. In Canada the Pontiac version was first called the Pontiac Wave, then the Pontiac G3 Wave, and finally the Pontiac G3 as used in the United States. From 2003 Suzuki also sold a version in Canada as the Swift+ alongside the Chevrolet and Pontiac cars.

The car itself

The T200 came as a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback from the start, with a three-door hatchback added in some European markets in 2005. Two front-end designs were sold: the original with headlamps detached from an amber turn-signal strip below, used mainly in Korea and North America, and an integrated, upward-slanting headlamp design introduced in Europe in 2003. Interiors used a circular motif, and early European cars carried a “Design Giugiaro” emblem. The car was sold in 120 countries, and production of the family continued in various forms until 2023, with the T300 replacement arriving in 2011.

Where the name went

The Wave name was dropped in Canada in favour of the G3, which matched the American badge. The Wave5 hatchback and the G3 Wave are the names used to distinguish the different production years and body styles of the Canadian car.
