History of the Plymouth Cambridge

The Cambridge replaced the Deluxe as Plymouth’s entry-level full-size car for 1951. In the 1951 and 1952 ranges it was the base model, with the shorter-wheelbase Concord above it, and for 1953 it was the only base model Plymouth offered.

When it was introduced the Cambridge brought new features to the bottom of the range: electric windshield wipers and downdraft carburettors. It also had “Safe-guard” brakes, which used two hydraulic cylinders per front wheel instead of one, a layout meant to keep the car stoppable if one circuit failed.

The model ran for only three years. For 1954 Plymouth reshaped its range, the Plaza took over as the entry model and the Belvedere became the top line.

Design and features

  • Electric wipers: a step up from the vacuum wipers of the cars it replaced.
  • Downdraft carburettors: part of the engine package introduced with the 1951 range.
  • Safe-guard brakes: two hydraulic cylinders per front wheel rather than one.
  • Entry-level role: the cheapest full-size Plymouth in 1951–1952 and the only base model in 1953.

Plymouth Cambridge versions

  • Cambridge (1951–1952): base model below the shorter Concord.
  • Cambridge (1953): the sole base model of the Plymouth range.

The Cambridge was replaced by the Plaza and sat below the Belvedere. More cars are in the Plymouth collection.
