History of the Mercedes-Benz Travego

In 1999 the O 580 Travego succeeded the O 404 as the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz touring coach range, with a completely new exterior design. It shared many components with the Setra 400 TopClass series. Three lengths were offered: the two-axle 12.2 m O580-15 RHD, the three-axle 13 m O580-16 RHD and the 14 m O580-17 RHD; the 12 m version was also available as the O580-15 RH with a lowered floor.

Its technical novelties included a new driver’s seat with a joystick for gear selection instead of a conventional lever. A year after launch the Travego received assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist, a continuous brake limiter and electronic stability programme, available as standard or optional. A second generation followed from 2006.

The third generation was launched in 2017 and, unlike earlier versions, is sold only in Turkey, where it is produced. Elsewhere the Travego was replaced by the third generation of the Tourismo. By then the coach range had been restructured around the Tourismo for volume sales and the Travego for the Turkish market.
