The McLaren GT is a two-seat grand tourer announced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It uses the platform of the 720S but adds a carbon-fibre rear deck under a glazed tailgate for luggage, and a softer version of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. In December 2023 it was replaced in the range by the GTS.

History of the McLaren GT
McLaren announced the GT at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, but released the full details only on 15 May 2019. It was the company’s first dedicated grand tourer, and it shared the 720S platform with the addition of a carbon-fibre rear deck topped by a glazed tailgate, which created much more storage space than the sports models.

The engine was a new variation of the 3,994 cc twin-turbocharged M840T V8 used in the 720S, given its own codename M840TE. Smaller turbochargers lowered peak output but improved low-rev response, and the GT was rated at 620 PS (456 kW) at 7,000 rpm and 630 N·m at 5,500 rpm. McLaren claimed 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 9 seconds and a top speed of 326.7 km/h (203 mph).
The suspension came from the 720S as well, with double wishbones at both ends and a modified version of the ProActive Chassis Control II system called Proactive Damping Control. In December 2023 McLaren announced the GTS as the GT’s successor, on the same platform, with an updated design, less weight and more power from the same 4.0-litre V8; it reached dealers in mid-2024.
Design and features
- M840TE engine: a gentler, more responsive tune of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 620 PS.
- Proactive Damping Control: a comfort-oriented version of the 720S’s active suspension.
- Real luggage space: 150 litres at the front and 420 litres under the glazed tailgate, enough for a set of golf clubs.
- Comfort seats: more shoulder padding and back support, with electric adjustment and heating on Pioneer and Luxe models.
- Two screens: a 7-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display that changes with Comfort, Sport or Track mode.
McLaren GT versions
- GT (2019–): the original grand tourer with 620 PS.
- GTS (from mid-2024): successor on the same platform with 635 PS at 7,500 rpm, a top speed of 326.7 km/h and 0–200 km/h in 8.9 seconds.
- Trim levels: Pioneer and Luxe, the latter with heated electric comfort seats.
The GT is the touring alternative to McLaren’s mid-engined sports cars, among them the 12C; the company’s first road car was the F1. More cars are in the McLaren collection.
