The Lotus Mark I was the first car designed and built by Colin Chapman, in 1948, while he was still a student at the University of London. It was built to compete as a trials car on an Austin 7 chassis and running gear and registered OX 9292.

History of the Lotus Mark I

Chapman built the body using a composite of thin aluminium bonded to plywood. He modified the rear suspension for better handling and the engine for more power, and his approach — sound engineering principles and ingenious chassis design — set the stage for the revolutionary designs that followed.

Chapman and his future wife competed in English trials, a form of competition over rough terrain against the clock. He continued to develop the Mark I: first larger wheels and tyres were fitted, then the front beam axle was split and hinged in the centre to give independent front suspension. The car’s success encouraged Chapman to keep designing competition cars.

The original Mark I was lost after being bought by a mysterious buyer in 1950. A replica was later built to the same dimensions using an identical Austin chassis and running gear.

Design and features

  • Austin 7 base: cheap, readily available chassis and running gear.
  • Aluminium and plywood body: a light composite for trials work.
  • Modified suspension: improved rear suspension and later a split, hinged front axle.
  • Registration OX 9292: the car’s original number.
  • Lost original: sold in 1950 and never traced; a replica exists.

Lotus Mark I versions

  • Lotus Mark I (1948): the single original trials car.

The Mark I led to the Lotus Mark II and then to the first production Lotus, the Mark VI. More cars are in the Lotus collection.
