History of the Kymco Super 8
One body, two engines
The Super 8 was originally planned only as a 125 cc model. The 50 cc version is technically identical apart from the engine, so both carry the same large 240 mm front wave disc and the same frame and bodywork, which means a 50 cannot be told from a 125 by looking at it. The 14-inch tyres give a stable ride and secure cornering at higher speeds. The main drawback is the small under-seat compartment, which holds at most a jet helmet, although the seat is long enough for two adults.
Engines and market
The scooter has been sold with three engines: 50 cc four-stroke, 125 cc four-stroke and, in Europe, a 50 cc two-stroke. The 50 cc four-stroke makes 2.4 kW at 7,500 rpm, the two-stroke 2.5 kW at 7,000 rpm and the 125 7 kW at 7,500 rpm with a top speed of 92 km/h. All versions share a 6-litre tank and a stepless belt transmission with a centrifugal clutch. The Super 8, especially in 125 cc form, has been more popular in South-East Asia than in Europe or North America. The model has been built since 2007, when the original 125 cc four-stroke was introduced and the 50 cc versions derived from it.
Design and features
- Big front brake: a 240 mm wave disc, larger than the 215 mm disc of the Peugeot Speedfight 3.
- 14-inch wheels: stability and confident cornering at speed.
- Identical bodies: the 50 and 125 share frame and bodywork.
- Two adults: the seat has room for two, unlike the small helmet compartment.
- Three engines: 50 cc four-stroke, 50 cc two-stroke and 125 cc four-stroke.
Kymco Super 8 versions
- Super 8 50 four-stroke: 2.4 kW, 108 kg.
- Super 8 50 two-stroke: 2.5 kW, sold in Europe.
- Super 8 125: 7 kW and 92 km/h, the model the range was designed around.
The Super 8 is the sporty small-wheel alternative to the Agility, with the People above it for high-wheel comfort. More models are in the Kymco collection.
