History of the KrAZ-6510

Development of the KrAZ-6510 quarry dump truck began in the 1980s as a further development and modernisation of the KrAZ-250; its technical characteristics were largely similar to those of the earlier model. Production started in 1992, and by 1994 the KrAZ-6510 dump trucks accounted for half of all the vehicles built by the Kremenchuk plant. In 1995 the plant built one KrAZ-6510 with an imported Cummins diesel.

In May 2006, as Ukraine moved to the international Euro-2 environmental standards, the plant decided to stop building the KrAZ-6510 for customers in Ukraine, and sales there ended on 1 January 2007. The plant still offered the model for export if foreign customers ordered it. In 2008 sixteen KrAZ-6510-052 dump trucks with an 8.5 m³ platform were delivered to the Ukrainian ministry of defence, and another batch of KrAZ-6510 trucks with a 10 m³ platform was built for the Cuban ministry of construction.

The base truck was a 13.5-tonne rear-tipping dump truck with a YaMZ-238M2 diesel of 240 PS and a five-speed gearbox. Its kerb weight was 11.3 tonnes and its gross weight 24.88 tonnes, and it reached 80 km/h. The recommended life was 255,000 km before the first major overhaul, with a further 204,000 km between overhauls, and the vehicle was to be scrapped after 459,000 km. The KrAZ-651001, the KrAZ-6444 tractor and the KrAZ-65101 chassis carried two fuel tanks.

Design and features

  • Rear tipping body: a 13.5-tonne payload in the base model, with 8 m³ as standard.
  • YaMZ-238M2: a 240 PS diesel with a five-speed gearbox, giving 80 km/h on the road.
  • Long service intervals: 255,000 km before the first overhaul and 204,000 km between overhauls.
  • Chassis family: the 65101 version served as a base for concrete mixers, cranes and tankers.

KrAZ-6510 versions

  • KrAZ-6510: the base dump truck with an 8 m³ platform.
  • KrAZ-651001: a version with a fuel heater in the drain line.
  • KrAZ-6510-052: a 15-tonne dump truck with an 8.5 m³ platform, 16 of them supplied to the Ukrainian army in 2008.
  • KrAZ-6510-030 Gornyak: a 15-tonne truck with a 10.5 m³ platform, shown at the SIA-2006 exhibition in Kyiv.
  • KrAZ-65101: a chassis developed in 1991–1992 for concrete mixers, truck cranes and other specialised machines, including the KDM-1522 road machine of 2003 and 29-seat crew vans built from 2005.
  • KrAZ-6444: a tractor unit on the KrAZ-6510 base for semi-trailers of up to 32 tonnes, built from 1990.

The 6510 was the successor of the KrAZ-250, and its heavy off-road relatives were the KrAZ-260 and the KrAZ-6322. More trucks are in the KrAZ collection.
