History of the Kawasaki KLX250S

The KLX250S was Kawasaki’s relatively lightweight dual-sport machine, designed to work on the road and on trails. The first generation was sold for the 2006 and 2007 model years.

Second generation, 2009–2020

The 2009 redesign brought an all-digital instrument console, a new and stiffer seat, a new fender shape and headlight, thicker spokes, increased fuel capacity, a new swingarm design, less front and rear suspension travel and slightly less ground clearance. A supermoto-inspired KLX250SF version was offered for the 2009 and 2010 model years.

Place in the range

The KLX250S sat between the small trail bikes and the larger KLR650 in Kawasaki’s dual-sport line, offering a lighter alternative for riders who wanted a machine that was easy to handle off the road.

Design and features

  • Light weight: the main reason the KLX250S was popular as a first dual-sport bike.
  • Road and trail ability: a dual-purpose design rather than a pure enduro or a pure road bike.
  • Digital instruments from 2009: part of a wider second-generation update.
  • Supermoto option: the KLX250SF for riders who wanted road-biased handling.

Kawasaki KLX250S versions

  • KLX250S (2006–2007): the first generation.
  • KLX250S (2009–2020): new bodywork, instruments, seat, swingarm and suspension settings.
  • KLX250SF (2009–2010): supermoto-inspired version.

The KLX250S is the smaller brother of the KLR650 and shares its off-road approach with the KDX. More models are in the Kawasaki collection.
