History of the Jelcz 014 Lux

The two coaches were introduced in 1964 as further variants of the buses Jelcz built under Czechoslovak licence. They were constructed on the basis of the Jelcz 043, but the body, made of steel profiles and mounted on a longeron frame, was fitted with skylights in the side edges of the roof and with fog lamps in the front bumper. The coaches also received decorative wheel covers. On the right-hand side there were single 900 mm doors between the front and rear axles and on the rear overhang, while the left-hand side had a door for the driver only.

The 1,900 mm high interior was arranged for 33 passengers on individual tube-framed seats covered in leatherette in the 014 Lux, or for 42 passengers on the bench seats taken from the Jelcz 043 in the 015 Lux. Because the underfloor luggage lockers were small, luggage was carried on shelves above the side windows and on a roof rack.

Power came from the Czechoslovak Škoda 706RT, a six-cylinder inline diesel of 11,781 cm³ with direct injection and a maximum output of 117.6 kW (160 hp), coupled to a five-speed synchronized manual gearbox. The final drive was 4.88, or 4.42 in the 015 Lux, which made both coaches faster than the other Jelcz variants of the family: 85 km/h for the 014 Lux and 90 km/h for the 015. The engine sat at the front over the front axle and drove the rear wheels through a two-part tubular shaft. The front axle was a rigid I-beam on semi-elliptic leaf springs with two hydraulic lever dampers, the rear axle was carried on leaf springs with lever dampers, and the worm-and-nut steering had an AB 125 hydraulic pump. A Jelcz 014 Lux also appears in the film Niebieskie jak Morze Czarne, in which a tour travels to Bulgaria by coach.

Design and features

  • Two seating layouts: 33 individual leatherette seats in the 014 Lux, 42 bench seats in the 015 Lux.
  • Škoda 706RT engine: 11,781 cm³, 160 hp, with a five-speed synchronized gearbox.
  • Faster final drive: 4.88 in the 014 Lux, 4.42 in the 015 Lux, for 85 and 90 km/h.

Jelcz 014 Lux versions

  • Jelcz 014 Lux: the coach with 33 individual seats and a 4.88 final drive.
  • Jelcz 015 Lux: the version with 42 bench seats from the 043 and a 4.42 final drive.

Both coaches were derived from the Jelcz 043 intercity bus, and the same family also produced the articulated Jelcz 021. More vehicles are in the Jelcz collection.
