History of the Irisbus Arway

A name made from two predecessors

The Arway was a single-decker coach for suburban routes, designed to replace the MyWay, an original Iveco model, and the Ares, an original Renault model inherited with the merger of the two bus divisions. The combination of the two names explains its own: AR from Ares and WAY from MyWay. It was produced at the former Karosa works in Vysoké Mýto, the Czech plant that Irisbus used for its intercity coaches.

Equipment and engines

The bus was equipped with a heating and air conditioning system, a music and announcement system and, optionally, a wheelchair lift. It had two doors, the central one available in single or double width. Power came from an Iveco Cursor 8 diesel of 7,880 cc meeting the Euro IV standard, developing 330 or 380 hp depending on the version.

In service

The first Arways were delivered in France in 2006. In Italy the model went into service with public transport companies in Piacenza, Ferrara, Brescia, Lodi, Rome and Naples, and in Spain it could be found with various operators, including those of Madrid.

Design and features

  • Iveco Cursor 8: a 7,880 cc six-cylinder diesel in Euro IV form, with 330 or 380 hp.
  • Two-door layout: the centre door could be ordered single or double width for busy routes.
  • Passenger equipment: heating and air conditioning, music and announcements, optional wheelchair lift.
  • Purpose-built for suburbs: a single-deck intercity bus rather than a touring coach.

Irisbus Arway versions

  • 330 hp version: the lower-powered Cursor 8 specification.
  • 380 hp version: the more powerful Cursor 8 specification.
  • Wheelchair-lift buses: the accessible variant with the optional lift.
  • Double-width centre door: an option for operators needing faster boarding.

The Arway was replaced in the Irisbus range by the Irisbus Crossway, and it followed the Irisbus Axer. More buses are in the Irisbus collection.
