The IFA H6 was a 6.5-tonne lorry made by the East German VEB Kraftfahrzeugwerk «Ernst Grube» in Werdau between 1952 and 1959. It was built as a long-wheelbase lorry and a short-wheelbase tractor, and its components also served for the H6B bus.

History of the IFA H6
The H6 was built at Werdau alongside the three-axle G5, and the two series shared several components. It was produced from 1952 to 1959 in two forms: the long-wheelbase lorry and the short-wheelbase tractor, the H6Z. The bus IFA H6B was based on H6 components.
The lorry used a conventional U-profile ladder frame with leaf-sprung rigid front and rear axles, the rear being a live axle. All wheels had pneumatically operated drum brakes and 12 to 20 inch tyres, with twin tyres at the rear. A dry single-disc clutch passed the drive to an unsynchronised five-speed gearbox with reverse.
Power came from the IFA EMaW 6-20, a water-cooled straight-six diesel with swirl-chamber injection, a displacement of 9,036 cm³ and a rated output of 120 PS (88.3 kW) with a maximum torque of 47 kp·m. The top speed was 54 km/h.
About 7,500 H6s were built. For political reasons the type had no successor: such a lorry had been developed, but production of the smaller IFA S 4000-1 started at the Werdau plant instead.
Design and features
- Straight-six diesel: the 9,036 cm³ EMaW 6-20 with swirl-chamber injection, rated at 120 PS.
- Simple chassis: U-profile ladder frame with leaf springs and rigid axles front and rear.
- Pneumatic brakes: drum brakes on all wheels, with twin tyres at the rear.
- No successor: the planned replacement was dropped and the Werdau works moved to the smaller S 4000-1 instead.
IFA H6 versions
- H6: the long-wheelbase lorry.
- H6Z: the short-wheelbase tractor unit.
- H6B: a bus based on H6 components.
The H6 was built at Werdau next to the three-axle IFA G5 and shared parts with it. Its place in the range was taken by the smaller S 4000-1. More lorries are in the IFA collection.
