The Hyundai Mighty is a line of light-duty commercial vehicles that Hyundai has built since 1987. The first generation was based on the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter, and the name has carried through the Mighty II of 1998 and a third generation of 2015 that is still in production, now with disc brakes, hill-start assistance and Hyundai’s own F engine.

History of the Hyundai Mighty

The first Mighty appeared in 1987 as Hyundai’s first 2.5 and 3.5-tonne truck, based on the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter and fitted with a floor-shift manual gearbox. Its main competition at home was the Kia Titan. In some markets the Mighty was an expensive choice and was replaced by the Hyundai Truck when that model became available between 1987 and 1997; in North America the Mighty was sold as the Bering LD.

The full model change came in October 1998, when the Mighty II was released and production of the first generation ended. The third generation followed in 2015. It brought safety equipment such as four-wheel disc brakes and Easy Hill Start, and it used a Hyundai F engine producing a maximum 170 hp and meeting the Euro 6 emission standard. For the 2025 model year the 4-tonne cargo model and the 10.3-tonne chassis cab gained air suspension seats; every trim including the regular and super cab got a height-adjustable driver’s seat belt, and the premium trim added power outside mirrors, door step lamps and an electronically controlled dimming rear-view mirror.

Hyundai also exported the Mighty widely, and in some countries it was assembled locally from the 1980s with many local components. In Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America its principal competitors were the Kia Titan, Kia Trade and Kia Frontier.
