The Holden Commodore SS was the sports variant of the Commodore, offered in every series from the VH of 1982 to the VF of 2017. Its name runs through all four generations of the car, from the first-generation VH, VK and VL through to the fourth-generation VE and VF.

History of the Holden Commodore SS

The first generation

The SS name appeared on the first-generation Commodore three times. It was the sports variant of the VH series, the third iteration of that generation, sold from 1982 to 1984, and it continued on the VK of 1984 to 1986 and the VL of 1986 to 1988, the last of the first-generation cars.

The second generation

With the VN of 1988 the Commodore moved to a new, larger generation, and the SS went with it. It was offered on the VN from 1988 to 1991, the VP from 1991 to 1993, the VR from 1993 to 1995 and the VS from 1995 to 1997, four series that carried the model from the 1980s into the late 1990s.

The third generation

The third generation, introduced with the VT in 1997, kept the SS in the range through the VT, VX of 2000 to 2002, VY of 2002 to 2004 and VZ of 2004 to 2006. In this period the SS sat at the top of the regular Commodore sports line, below the separate models built by Holden Special Vehicles.

The fourth generation

The final two SS models belonged to the fourth-generation Commodore: the VE, built from 2006 to 2013 on Holden’s own Zeta platform, and the VF, sold from 2013 until the end of local production in 2017. With the end of Australian manufacturing the SS disappeared along with the rear-wheel drive Commodore it was based on.

Design and features

  • Sports trim: the SS was the sporting version of the standard Commodore range.
  • Thirteen series: from the VH of 1982 to the VF of 2017.
  • Four generations: the badge spanned every generation of the Commodore.
  • Separate from HSV: the SS was a Holden model, not a Holden Special Vehicles one.

Holden Commodore SS versions

  • VH, VK and VL SS (1982–1988): the first-generation cars.
  • VN to VS SS (1988–1997): the second-generation cars.
  • VT to VZ SS (1997–2006): the third-generation cars.
  • VE and VF SS (2006–2017): the fourth-generation cars.

The SS was a version of the Holden Commodore, with the VN, VT and VY series covered separately. More cars are in the Holden collection.
