The Gilera Città was a small moped built from 1979 to 1989, part of the Piaggio world and sharing its engine and transmission with the Piaggio Bravo. Gilera sold the same machine as the Eco, while the German market knew it as the EC1 and other markets as the Città.

History of the Gilera Città
One moped, several names

The Eco was produced by Gilera from 1979 to 1989, inside the Piaggio group. It used the engine and transmission of the Piaggio Bravo moped. Markets did not agree on its name: in Germany it was called EC1, while elsewhere it was sold as the Città.
It was built in a single series and was available either with a single speed or with a variator. The design was by Paolo Martin, the same designer responsible for the CBA in the same years.
A Piaggio-group moped
By this time Gilera was one of several brands in the Piaggio group, and its small mopeds shared their mechanical parts with the Piaggio range rather than being Gilera designs. That is why the Città belongs as much to the history of the Bravo as to the Gilera story, and why the same machine appears under three names in different markets.
Design and features
- Piaggio Bravo mechanics: engine and transmission taken directly from the Piaggio moped.
- Three names: Eco, Città and EC1 for different markets.
- Two transmissions: single speed or variator.
- Paolo Martin design: the same designer as the Gilera CBA.
- Single series: one specification for the whole ten-year life.
Gilera Città versions
- Gilera Eco: the name used in Italy.
- Gilera Città: the name used in other markets.
- EC1: the name used in Germany.
The other Gilera moped of the same years is the CBA, and the later small Gilera is the Bullit. More models are in the Gilera collection.
