History of the Garelli Gulp
The first Gulp of 1967
The first version of the Gulp was presented in 1967, and over the following years the model was developed continuously. From 1968 Garelli added the Gulp Flex, the Gulp Matic with a two-speed automatic gearbox, and the Gulp 3V with a manual three-speed gearbox and a sportier handlebar.
Development and replacement
The engine was improved several times during production, among other things with more modern crankcases and revised cylinder heads. At the end of the 1970s the Gulp range was replaced by the new Garelli Vip series, after more than a decade in which the model had become one of the firm’s best sellers.
Design and features
- Three gearbox choices: single speed, two-speed automatic or three-speed manual, so buyers could pick the version that suited them.
- Continuous development: the engine received new crankcases and revised cylinder heads during production.
- Solid and simple: the Gulp was known for robust construction and straightforward engineering.
- Long life: eleven years in production, from 1967 to 1978.
Garelli Gulp versions
- Gulp Flex: single-speed version with a new telescopic fork.
- Gulp Matic: two-speed automatic, the easiest version to ride.
- Gulp 3V: three-speed hand-shift with a sportier handlebar.
The Gulp was replaced by the Vip, and it shared its market with the Garelli Noi later on; the earliest Garelli moped is described in the Garelli Mosquito article. More machines are in the Garelli collection.
