History of the Ferrari F2008

The F2008 was driven by the 2007 World Champion Kimi Räikkönen and by Felipe Massa, both of whom stayed with the team for a second and a third season respectively. The chassis was designed by Aldo Costa, Simone Resta, Tiziano Battistini, Marco Fainello, John Iley and Marco de Luca, with Mario Almondo leading production as executive technical director and Gilles Simon heading engine and electronics, assisted by Lorenzo Sassi on engine design and development and Mattia Binotto on engine operations.

The standard ECU

The car featured a new standard Electronic Control Unit, the system that controls the whole car, produced by McLaren Electronic Systems and required by the regulations. The unit also removed most of the driver aids used in previous seasons, including traction control, engine braking and the electronically assisted starting system, while making the management of the differential, engine and gear changes easier for the engineers.

A heavier car

The F2008 weighed more than the previous season’s F2007 because of rule changes, including a gearbox that had to be used for four consecutive races and higher minimum weights. The regulation changes moved the balance of performance away from the driver aids that had shaped the previous generation of cars and towards mechanical grip and reliability.

The title

Ferrari won the 2008 constructors’ championship with the F2008, and as of 2026 it remains the team’s most recent title of that kind. The car therefore closes the most recent championship chapter in Ferrari’s Formula One history.

Design and features

  • Standard ECU: the McLaren-built control unit became mandatory for every team in 2008.
  • No driver aids: traction control, engine braking and assisted starts were removed.
  • Longer-life gearbox: one unit had to last four consecutive races.
  • Constructors’ champions: Ferrari’s most recent title as of the 2026 season.
