History of the Ferrari F2007

The F2007 was unveiled to the public on 14 January 2007 at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in Maranello. Its chassis was significantly altered from the 248 F1, the car Ferrari used in 2006 to finish as runners-up to Renault in the constructors’ championship, with a wheelbase 85 mm longer among the changes.

Design team

The chassis was designed by Aldo Costa, Simone Resta, Tiziano Battistini, Marco Fainello, John Iley and Marco de Luca, with Mario Almondo leading production as executive technical director and Gilles Simon in charge of engine and electronics, assisted by Lorenzo Sassi on engine design and development and Mattia Binotto on engine operations.

Traction control and the end of an era

As part of new FIA rules for 2008, which banned driver aids through the introduction of a standard ECU for all teams, the F2007 was the last Ferrari Formula One car to use traction control. The change removed a system Ferrari had pioneered in 1990 and used to good effect in the intervening years.

The championship

The car is best known for giving Kimi Räikkönen his only World Championship title and Ferrari its first constructors’ title since Michael Schumacher helped the team win in 2004. As of 2026 it remains the last Ferrari Formula One car to win the drivers’ championship, which gives the F2007 a particular place in the marque’s history.

Design and features

  • Longer wheelbase: the chassis was significantly altered from the 248 F1, with 85 mm added.
  • Räikkönen’s title: Kimi Räikkönen won his only drivers’ championship in this car.
  • Constructors’ champions: Ferrari’s first title since 2004.
  • Last with traction control: the 2008 standard ECU removed the system for good.

Ferrari F2007 versions

  • F2007 (2007): the single specification raced through the season.

The F2007 followed the Ferrari F2005 line and preceded the Ferrari F2008, which won the constructors’ championship. More Ferrari racing cars are in the Ferrari collection.
