History of the Ferrari F2005

After six straight seasons of winning the constructors’ championship and five straight drivers’ championships, the F2005 was not nearly as successful as its predecessors. It scored only a single victory, and Ferrari finished with its lowest constructors’ result since 1995.

Tyres: the decisive factor

The main reason for Ferrari’s lack of form was the Bridgestone tyres the team used, which were poor in comparison with the Michelin tyres fitted by most of its rivals. Renault, McLaren, Toyota, Williams, BAR, Red Bull Racing and Sauber all ran Michelin, and a new rule for 2005 requiring races to be completed without tyre changes made the difference even more important: a tyre that could not be swapped during the race had to last, and Bridgestone’s were not up to it against the competition.

Originally intended to debut at the Spanish Grand Prix, the F2005 was an evolution rather than a clean-sheet design, its changes aimed at improving airflow and conserving the tyres.

The F2005 closed a chapter: it was the last Ferrari Formula One car with a V10 engine, and it ended the sequence of championship-winning seasons that had preceded it. Its single win stood in sharp contrast to the fifteen victories of the F2002 three years earlier.

Design and features

  • Last V10 Ferrari: the final Formula One car from Maranello with a ten-cylinder engine.
  • Adapted to new rules: no tyre changes during races changed how cars had to be designed.
  • Bridgestone disadvantage: tyres were the main reason for the car’s lack of pace.
  • One win: Ferrari’s weakest season for a decade.

Ferrari F2005 versions

  • F2005 (2005): the single specification raced through the season, developed from earlier cars.

The F2005 followed the Ferrari F2002 line and came before the Ferrari F2007, which returned Ferrari to the title. More Ferrari racing cars are in the Ferrari collection.
