History of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

The 612 Scaglietti replaced the smaller 456 and was designed as a genuine four-seater, with enough space in the back for adults. Its design, especially the large side scallops and the headlights, pays homage to the 375 MM built in 1954, which the director Roberto Rossellini commissioned for his wife, Ingrid Bergman.

Chassis and body

The 612 is Ferrari’s second all-aluminium vehicle after the 360 Modena. Its space frame was manufactured in collaboration with Alcoa from aluminium extrusions and castings, and the aluminium body is welded on. The chassis went on to form the basis of the 599 GTB flagship grand tourer. The body was produced at Ferrari’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti plant in Modena, the former home of the coachbuilder the car is named after, and then taken to Maranello where the V12 engine and interior were installed.

Engine and gearbox

The 612 shares its engine with the 575 Superamerica: despite the name suggesting six litres, the displacement is actually 5,748 cc. With an 11:1 compression ratio it gives a top speed of 320 km/h and 0–100 km/h in 4 seconds. Two transmissions were offered: a six-speed manual and a six-speed automated manual with paddle shift designated F1A, a much refined version of the F1 transmission used in the 360, built by Graziano Trasmissioni. Only 199 cars are reported to have been built with the manual gearbox, 60 of them for the United States.

Versions and production

From 2006 the pre-OTO cars could be ordered with Handling Gran Turismo Sport or Handling Gran Turismo Competizione packages, which brought recalibrated shock absorbers and a gearbox 150 ms faster, with an F1-S mode replacing the automatic mode, polished exhaust grilles, the factory sports exhaust, specific 19-inch modular wheels and painted brake calipers; HGT-C added carbon ceramic brakes. In 2007 Ferrari announced the availability of the SuperFast robotic gearbox and new equipment. A total of 3,025 cars were produced.
