The Fendt family traces its history back some 350 years and was known in the Allgäu for tower clocks and violins. In 1898 Johann Georg Fendt began selling and servicing Deutz stationary engines. His sons Xaver and Hermann joined him in 1928 and added a motorised grass mower, and in 1930 they built their first tractor, the 4.5 kW (6 hp) Dieselross.
The firm was registered in 1937 as Xaver Fendt & Co., Maschinen- und Schlepperfabrik. In 1938 came the Dieselross F 22 with up to 16 kW (22 hp), the start of a series that ran until 1958. Today Fendt makes tractors, combine and forage harvesters, balers and telescopic handlers; AGCO bought it in 1997.
