The Fendt Fix 2 was a small two-cylinder diesel tractor introduced in 1959 as the smallest member of Fendt’s “ff” series, alongside the Farmer and the Favorit. It was sold in two forms: the water-cooled Fix 2 W, works number FW 120, with 18 hp, and the air-cooled Fix 2 L, FL 120, with 19 hp.

History of the Fendt Fix 2

The Fix 2 went on sale in 1959 as the further development of the Fix 1 and the smallest of the three “ff” lines: Fix, Farmer and Favorit. Fendt advertised the new model with its “technically mature construction” and with the combination of “beauty of form and driving comfort”. One of its most noticeable details was the bonnet with built-in headlights, protected as a German utility model (DGBM). The water-cooled version stayed in production until 1964, the air-cooled one until 1963.

The two versions used different MWM two-cylinder four-stroke diesels. The FW 120 had the water-cooled KD 211 Z of 1,250 cc with a swirl-chamber combustion process, 85 mm bore and 110 mm stroke, a compression ratio of 18:1, Bosch injection equipment and a two-circuit thermostat; it developed 18 hp. The FL 120 had the air-cooled AKD 311 Z of 1,400 cc with direct injection, 90 mm bore, 110 mm stroke, a compression ratio of 19:1 and an axial fan, and it made 19 hp. Both ran to about 2,000 rpm. A Fichtel & Sachs K 12 single dry clutch passed the drive to a Fendt group gearbox with six forward and two reverse gears, to which three super-crawl gears and a reverse crawl gear could be added. A five-claw differential lock was fitted.

The rear power take-off was clutch-dependent and ran at 570 rpm, with an optional ground-speed version giving six turns per metre, and a belt pulley of 170 mm diameter running at 1,905 rpm was also available. The rear brakes were 300 by 50 mm internal-expanding units on the rear wheels with a split pedal acting as a steering brake, and the front axle was Fendt’s sprung swinging axle. The three-point hydraulic system of block construction, type 80.05, had a lifting capacity of 7,475 Nm, and Fendt’s “Hydro-Drucksystem” let the driver add rear-axle load for mounted implements from a control unit. The electrical system was 12 V, with a 1.8 hp Bosch starter, a 90 W generator and a 60 Ah battery. Fuel consumption averaged 1.35 litres per hour, or 185 g per PSh.

The driver sat on a rubber-sprung seat adjustable for the driver’s size and weight, with a bench on the left mudguard; an all-weather canopy with a panoramic windscreen and a right mudguard seat was optional. The rear hitch could be turned and adjusted in height, while the front hitch was rigid. Optional equipment included 4½-foot and 5-foot Fendt mowers, a belt drive, cage wheels, ballast weights, a steering lock, a spotlight and a second lift-rod adjustment.

Design and features

  • Two engine versions: a water-cooled 18 hp MWM and an air-cooled 19 hp MWM, with 1,250 and 1,400 cc respectively.
  • Bonnet with built-in headlights: a protected design detail that gave the small Fendt its characteristic face.
  • Six-speed group gearbox: two reverse gears as standard and optional crawl gears for special work.
  • Hydro-Drucksystem: hydraulic rear-axle load control to improve traction and reduce wheel slip on poor ground.
  • Compact dimensions: 2,890 mm long and 1,265 kg, with a sprung front axle and a tight turning circle.

Fendt Fix 2 versions

  • Fix 2 W (FW 120, 1959–1964): water-cooled 18 hp version, 2,292 built.
  • Fix 2 L (FL 120, 1959–1963): air-cooled 19 hp version, 4,249 built.
  • Crawl-gear tractors: six forward and two reverse gears plus three super-crawl and one reverse crawl gear.
  • Equipment versions: mower, belt pulley, all-weather canopy, cage wheels and ballast weights from the options list.

The Fix 2 was the smallest of the “ff” family; the larger Fendt GT tool carrier and the modern Fendt 200 Vario show how the range developed. More Fendt tractors are in the Fendt collection.
