The Ducati 1198 is a sport bike that Ducati built from 2009 to 2011. It was an evolution of the 1098 with more power and torque, redesigned wheels, lighter headlights, traction control and lighter fairings on the S model, and it kept the single-sided swingarm of the 998 heritage.

History of the Ducati 1198

The 1198 arrived in 2009 as the next step from the 1098, sharing its design language but with a larger engine and a series of detail changes: redesigned wheels, lighter headlights, traction control and, on the S, lighter fairings. The single-sided swingarm that had become a Ducati signature stayed. The 1098 remained in the catalogue alongside the new model at first.

The 1198 engine was an evolution of the unit used in the official racing version, with 10 hp more than before, and it stayed a 90-degree desmodromic L-twin. A detuned 150 hp version of the same engine, with different valve overlap, later went into the Multistrada 1200.

In racing the 1198 took over from the 1098: Carlos Checa won both the riders’ and the manufacturers’ titles in the 2011 Superbike World Championship on the 1198 RS, and the model also collected numerous wins and podiums between 2009 and 2012. It was replaced by the Panigale.

Design and features

  • Bigger twin: 1198 cc and a claimed 170 hp, 10 hp more than the 1098.
  • Traction control: standard on the 2011 base model together with the Ducati Quick Shift.
  • S specification: Öhlins suspension, forged aluminium wheels and carbon parts.
  • Single-sided swingarm: carried over from the 916/998 line.

Ducati 1198 versions

  • 1198 (2009): the base model in a single colour.
  • 1198 S (2009–2010): traction control, Öhlins suspension, forged wheels and carbon parts.
  • 1198 S Corse (2010): multicolour Ducati Corse livery, with ABS or a lighter aluminium tank.

  • 1198 SP (2011): S Corse specification with an Öhlins TTX rear shock, slipper clutch and quick shift.

The 1198 followed the 1098 and was replaced by the 1199 Panigale; the smaller 848 used the same chassis. More Ducatis are in the Ducati collection.
